Workshop invites community input on Broadway safety improvements in Oak Park

Residents will have an opportunity next month to help shape safety improvements along Broadway in Oak Park at an upcoming community workshop.

The workshop will take place April 9 from 5:30-7 p.m. at American Legion High School (3801 Broadway). Attendees can learn about and provide input on two major efforts: the Envision Broadway in Oak Park Complete Street Project and the Broadway Vision Zero project.

Both projects focus on reducing traffic speeds, improving safety and creating a corridor that works better for people walking, biking, taking transit and driving.

“These projects are about making Broadway safer and more accessible for everyone who lives, works and travels through Oak Park,” said Stephanie Saiz, assistant engineer with the City’s Department of Public Works. “Community input is critical to ensuring the improvements reflect the needs and priorities of the neighborhood.”

The Envision Broadway in Oak Park Complete Street Project would redesign Broadway between Franklin Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard with fewer travel lanes, pedestrian refuge areas, buffered bike lanes, sidewalk and streetscape upgrades, street parking where feasible and improved access to Route 51 bus stops.

The Broadway Vision Zero project focuses on the stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Stockton Boulevard. Proposed changes include reducing vehicle lanes from four to two, adding a center turn lane and creating separated bike lanes with a striped buffer. The project will also enhance pedestrian crossing and improve accessibility along the corridor.

The workshop will include project updates, opportunities to review proposed improvements and time for community members to share feedback that will help shape the final designs.
