Community members can now share their thoughts on the future name of Cesar Chavez Park.
A new public survey launched today as part of a community engagement process that will help inform recommendations for the park’s future name. Feedback collected through the survey, outreach events, and stakeholder engagement will be reviewed by City Council Subcommittee, the Parks and Community Enrichment Commission, and ultimately the Sacramento City Council.
The survey is available online in both English and Spanish through July 24.
Mayor Kevin McCarty appointed a City Council subcommittee to guide the renaming process. The subcommittee includes the Mayor along with Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes, Mayor Pro Tem Eric Guerra, and Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum.
“This process is about listening to our community and creating meaningful opportunities for neighbors to share their perspectives,” said Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes. “Our Downtown Park is an important public space with deep connections to Sacramento’s history and culture, and community input will help shape the recommendations that create its future.”
Located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, Cesar Chavez Park is one of the city’s oldest public spaces. Originally established as part of Sacramento’s 1849 city plan, the park has served generations of residents as a gathering place for civic events, cultural celebrations, performances, demonstrations, and everyday recreation.
The renaming effort responds to community interest in reevaluating the current park name and reflects Sacramento’s commitment to transparency, public participation, and ensuring public spaces continue to reflect community values.
Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on what values, histories, stories, and identities a future park name should represent. The survey also provides an opportunity to suggest potential names and share personal connections to the park.
Following the survey period, staff will review public input and prepare recommendations for consideration by the Mayor-appointed Council Subcommittee and the Parks and Community Enrichment Commission. The Sacramento City Council will make the final decision regarding any future park name, which is expected later this year.
No decisions have been made regarding the statue located in the park. Once a new park name is finalized, the City will begin working with the artist to determine the appropriate path forward and will share updates with the public as that process begins.
