Meet Robert Wenzler, a 19 year veteran with the Sacramento Fire Department. For the first 10 years with the Department, Robert worked as a firefighter-paramedic and, for the past nine years, he has been an Engineer. As an Engineer, Robert drives and maintains the fire truck and is assigned to Fire Station 5, located at 731 Broadway.
It was a pivotal moment in Robert’s life that solidified his desire to become a firefighter:
“I originally wanted to become a firefighter to help people. I remember seeing a large fire in Oakland when I was working on the ambulance. There were so many firefighters working together as a team to put out the blaze. Hoses everywhere. But the firefighters who really got my attention were the guys on the roof. It was amazing. I remember seeing them cut a hole in the roof with their saw to let out the heat and smoke and as they were finishing their cut, flames shot up into the air about 15 feet. I will never forget it. That is the moment I knew that I wanted to be a ‘truckee’.”
A vegetarian for the last six years, Robert also plays the cajon and djembe drums, loves to surf, and teaches yoga.
