City asks for volunteers to assist with count of the homeless

The City, together with Sacramento County are asking for volunteers to step up and help Sacramento Steps Forward better understand and serve our homeless population. On the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 28, hundreds of volunteers will be helping to count and survey homeless persons throughout Sacramento.

“The Homeless Count ensures Sacramento can continue to receive federal funding for local housing and services to assist homeless people and families,” explained Emily Halcon, the City’s Homeless Services Coordinator.

Volunteers will be placed into teams of four with other community volunteers and the assistance of local law enforcement. Each team will be assigned to a designated map area to count and survey homeless individuals in that specific area. More than 400 volunteers (16 years and older) are needed; all volunteers must complete a training prior to the count.

Trainings are being offered:

  • Saturday, Jan. 24 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, Jan. 25 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
  • Monday, Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Monday, Jan. 26 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
