City, partners recognized for circumventing ‘carmageddon’ during Golden 1 Center events

Today the City, Sacramento Kings and transit/downtown partners were honored for collaboration and commitment to a smooth opening of downtown Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center. The collaboration eliminated the potential for “carmageddon” typical of a new arena or stadium opening in a downtown.

Honored this morning by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG)with a SACOG Salutes Special Recognition award was the City of Sacramento, Sacramento Kings, Regional Transit, Roseville Transit, Yolo Bus, Downtown Sacramento Partnership and the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA).

The honorees teamed up months prior to the opening to expand transit service for events, improve parking supply, ensure stations were well lit and clean and start a parking reservation system, SacPark.org.

SABA also worked with the Kings to promote bicycling to events. SABA offers a valet parking service at certain fair weather events. The City and its partners promote GetHereSac.com as a tool for people to plan ahead for how to travel downtown.  As a result, the downtown traffic jams during opening events never transpired.

The City thanks its partners for outstanding collaboration during an exciting time in downtown history. The City also thanks the public for planning ahead for the easiest way to get downtown for all events!
