City, partners offering free tax preparation

The City of Sacramento, in partnership with MyFreeTaxes, United Way Worldwide, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) are offering free tax preparation services. Individuals can choose to file online or visit a VITA free tax preparation site.

Individuals who wish to do their own taxes without assistance may utilize the Special Portal for the City of Sacramento. This site allows taxpayers to complete federal and up to two state returns for free, electronically file and have their refund directly deposited into their checking and savings accounts. Income limit is $64,000 to file federal and state returns for free.

Those with incomes of $54,000 or less for 2016 qualify for the VITA program. VITA volunteers will help prepare federal and state taxes. The following Community Centers and sites will have volunteers available to provide free tax preparation:

  • South Natomas Community Center – 2921 Truxel Road
  • Pannell/Meadowview Community Center – 2450 Meadowview Road
  • Hart Senior Center – 915 27th Street

For more information about operating hours, how to make an appointment, and what to bring to tax sites, please visit VITA’s webpage.
