Council Update on Inventory of Public Restrooms

The City is committed to providing a safe, inviting, and welcoming place for everyone. This Tuesday, City staff will be providing Council a report on the current inventory of public restrooms. The report provides inventory of all existing restrooms open to the public in the City, the location of planned new restrooms, and short and long-term recommendations to improve public restroom access.

Key highlights of the report include:

  • There are 85 locations within the City with public restrooms
  • Of the 85 locations, 28 restrooms are open 24 hours a day and seven days a week
  • 58 restrooms have varying operational hours

The full council report which includes a map of restroom locations can be found here.

Short-term recommendations

As part of the presentation, City staff will outline recommendations to address the urgent need for access to public restrooms including: wayfinding signage, maps in visitor brochures, and additional crews for on-call cleanup.

Long-term recommendations

For long term strategies, staff recommends the following: a collaboration effort with the County to identify other locations within the City and County limits, suitable locations to install permanent restroom facilities like the Portland Loo, a possible stipend program to encourage participation by local businesses to open up their restrooms to the public, and identifying funding and grants of providing clean and accessible restrooms for all.
