Sacramento community centers now offer extended hours to better serve city neighborhoods

City of Sacramento community centers now are offering extended business hours. The extended hours are funded by Measure U tax dollars and began in January.

“Thanks to Measure U support, City operated Community Centers can now better serve our neighborhoods,” said Recreation Superintendent Katie Houser. “Previously, some of our most utilized centers were closed one day a week and on the weekends. With this expansion, a majority of City operated centers are now open Monday through Saturday.”

Sacramento’s community centers serve residents through a variety of programs, clubs, support groups and events. Interested in shuffleboard, crafts, ceramics or yoga? Check out your neighborhood community center. Senior adults and teens can also find programs and events catered to them, including “S.W.A.G = Seniors with Active Goals” at George Sim Community Center and “Teen Scene,” offering a safe place to hang out at Sam & Bonnie Pannell Community Center.

Throughout the year, centers also will expand their programming, including Friday Night Hot Spots youth events, as well as meaningful experiences for residents of all ages, such as the Artists in Residency program, a variety of special events, and community services including tax preparation assistance, counseling services and census assistance.

Registering and paying for activities and facilities is now easier than ever, as George Sim, Hagginwood and Oak Park Community recently began accepting credit card payments. The Coloma, Pannell, and South Natomas Community Centers will continue to accept all forms of payment.

Each center will host a community event to celebrate the extended hours.
