Household junk pickup starts again in February. Here is what you need to know

Do you know how to dispose of bulky household waste, like old furniture or car tires?

City of Sacramento Solid Waste and Recycling residential customers now can make an appointment for a household junk pickup to dispose of items too large to fit in the curbside container.

Residential customers are eligible for two free junk pickups a year, and extra appointments are available for an additional fee. Appointments are available Feb.14 through the end of October.

“Customers can sometimes expect a wait of about two to three weeks, and appointment times can fill up quickly,” said Jesa David, media and communications specialist for Recycling and Solid Waste. “We encourage all residents to plan ahead.”

To make an appointment, customers can call City Customer Service at 3-1-1 (or 916-264-5011 outside City limits), use the free 311 app, or go online at Sac311.org

Extra yard waste that can’t fit in to the curbside container can be part of a household junk appointment, but it must be kept separate from the other items, and any branches must be cut to three feet in length and no more than four inches in diameter.

Materials should not be placed in the street more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled pickup, and the pile must not exceed four by four by nine feet in size. Illegal piles will be tagged for removal to ensure that City crews and traffic can move safely through the streets.

Customers should check the Waste Wizard online sorting app to confirm where to dispose of household hazardous waste such as batteries, paint and pesticides, which can be dropped off to a local household hazardous waste facility listed here

In addition to household junk, customers can make an appliance or e-waste appointment for up to four e-waste items and two household appliances. There are special instructions on placement of appliances and e-waste and should not be part of any household junk pile. Appliance and e-waste appointments are separate from household junk. Two free appointments can be made in a calendar year, and the program runs January through December.
