These streets in Sacramento are closing for IRONMAN California

Thousands of athletes are expected to participate in the 2022 IRONMAN California race in Sacramento on Sunday, Oct. 23.

The triathlon competition will temporarily close several streets in downtown and midtown Sacramento. The Oct. 23 event ends at the California State Capitol.

Some streets will close as soon as Monday, Oct. 17, as organizers prepare for the race, which includes a 2.4-mile swimming portion through the American and Sacramento rivers, a 112-mile biking portion and a 26.2-mile running portion. Motorists should expect traffic delays.

The areas most directly affected on Oct. 23 by the competition will be Old Sacramento, downtown (between F and N streets) and Capitol Mall. (Click on the maps below to see the biking and running courses).

Streets affected by the competition are as follows:

Monday, Oct. 17 at 8 a.m. to Tuesday, Oct. 25

  • 10th Street from L Street to N Street until 1 p.m.
  • 9th Street from N Street to L Street until 8 a.m.
  • Capitol Mall from 9th Street to 10th Street until 8 a.m.

Saturday, Oct. 22 at 8 a.m. to Monday, Oct. 24

  • Capitol Mall from 8th Street to 9th Street until 1 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 23 (Race Day)

  • Tower Bridge from Riverfront Street to Front Street closes at 7:30 a.m. opens at 11 a.m.
  • Broadway from the Sacramento River Bike Trail to Marina View Drive closes at 9 a.m. opens at 9 p.m.
  • Marina View Drive from Broadway to Ramp Way closes at 9 a.m. opens at 9 p.m.
  • Ramp Way from Marina View Drive to the Sacramento River Bike Trail closes at 9 a.m. opens at 9 p.m.
  • Front Street from Broadway to Neasham Circle closes at 9 a.m. opens at 9 p.m.
  • Neasham Circle from Front Street to Front Street (Old Sac) closes at 9 a.m. opens at 9 p.m.
  • Front Street (Old Sac) Parking Strip from Neasham Circle to I Street closes at 7 a.m. opens at 9 p.m.

Freeway Closures (reopens at 6 p.m. on Race Day)

  • Westbound I-50 off ramp from 5th Street closes at 7 a.m.
  • Eastbound I-50 on ramp from River Road on ramp near 15th Street closes at 7 a.m.
