City celebrates opening of Del Rio Trail art exhibit at free community event July 7

The City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts + Culture is inviting community members to the opening of “BEFORE AND BEYOND,” the Del Rio Trail inspired art exhibit, on July 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Twisted Track Gallery (1730 12th Street).

The free exhibit open to the public features 20 works of art of different disciplines including visual art, folk art, ceramic, social practice, and music. The opening night event will also feature a music performance by Citywater (original music composition by Josiah Catalan) at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

As part of the Del Rio Trail art project, the City hired 20 Sacramento artists to create artwork in different disciplines related to the Del Rio Trail and engage community through the artists’ creative process. The art project is funded from Clean California grants from the State of California.

“We are really excited to be working with these talented artists and supporting their creative efforts and ideas while building interest and awareness about the Del Rio Trail,” said Art in Public Places Manager Donald Gensler.

Artists submitted proposals along with examples of their work and were selected by a panel to receive a $7,500 grant to create artwork inspired by the Del Rio Trail. This biking and walking trail is currently under construction along the historic railroad tracks between the Meadowview Freeport intersection and Riverside Boulevard at Interstate 5.

The artists will keep or sell the work they created for the trail, furthering the benefit to the local arts community and creative economy in Sacramento, according to Gensler. It will also give people the chance to experience and even purchase work they like.

The work will be on display at Twisted Track Gallery July 7 to 29 on Fridays 6-10 p.m.; Saturdays 12-10 p.m. and Sundays 12-5 p.m.
