With the National Weather Service forecasting a heat advisory from Friday, June 30, through the evening of Sunday, July 2, many jurisdictions in the region are set to open places where residents can cool off.
The City of Sacramento will activate the Outreach and Engagement Center at 3615 Auburn Blvd. and the Sam & Bonnie Pannell Community Center at 2450 Meadowview Rd. as respite centers.
The Outreach and Engagement Center will operate Friday, June 30, Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2 from 2 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning, ending Monday, July 3 at 7 a.m.
The Auburn Boulevard site can accommodate up to 50 people at a time. The center has storage available for personal belongings if needed and will accept pets. Snacks will be available.
The Sam & Bonnie Pannell Community Center will operate Friday, June 30, Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., however, the center does not allow pets. Personal storage will be limited to what visitors can carry with them.
In addition to air-conditioning, both sites will offer water and places to recharge phones and other devices.
During this time, libraries and community centers will also be available during their normal hours of operation where people in need can use these air-conditioned buildings as places to cool off.
Our partnership with Regional Transit continues, with them providing no-cost transportation to and from Weather Respite Centers during their operation. Additionally, our partners at the County are extending the operational hours at three DHA office locations as cooling centers. The County Cooling Centers will operate at the following locations, dates, and hours:

- Monday, July 3 – Offices are open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., extended hours for weather respite are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The City will continue to monitor the National Weather Service’s forecast and extend weather-respite operations as needed. The City will also monitor capacity at the OEC to determine if other activations are necessary.
