City seeking artists for 5,000 square foot vinyl illustration art for Sutter’s Landing Park

The City’s Office of Arts + Culture is accepting applications for artists, illustrators and graphic designers to design a 5,000 square foot vinyl mural on the exterior of the skate park building at Sutter’s Landing Park.

The selected artist will be commissioned to create a mural design to address images and content highlighting the American River watershed, its wildlife, ecology, flora, and fauna. Individual artists or artist teams may apply.

“This is a unique public art project because we are looking for an illustrator to eventually develop this large-scale mural design,” said the City’s Art in Public Places Manager Donald Gensler. “The goal is to create a monumental vinyl mural that may be a teaching tool and discussion opportunity for school groups, environmental advocacy groups, and other visitors to the park.”

Professional artists with experience in large scale designs, environmental designs, or illustrations are encouraged to apply. Additional consideration will be given to artists who have prior experience with or connections to the American River and Sacramento area.

Artists will be chosen by a panel and interviewed and scored through a competitive application process.

Once selected, the artist may develop the design using any number of techniques including but not limited to painting, drawing, photomontage, or other digital graphic representations. Interested artists should submit prior work that shows their experience and expertise in this type of illustration and design work.

With money secured from a grant from the State, the City will make a number of improvements to the park’s infrastructure including the new vinyl art and a concession stand that will rent equipment for river activities.
