With a storm approaching, City is asking residents to help keep drains clear

A storm system is expected to arrive in Sacramento on Sunday, bringing with it several inches of rain before departing later next week.

The storm’s arrival during leaf season could cause localized drainage issues, said Carlos Eliason, Department of Utilities spokesperson.

“We’re expecting to see some areas of minor street flooding because of the amount of leaves currently on the ground, which can clog storm drains,” Eliason said.

Crews from the Department of Utilities will be monitoring conditions during the storm to respond to issues that may occur, including clogged drains and clearing debris from sidewalks and roads.

“We will have extra crews on standby to respond to issues we’re seeing or reports from the public,” said Eliason.

The City is asking residents to help reduce the number of clogged storm drains by doing the following:

  1. Use a broom or a rake to clear leaves and debris away from storm drains near you.
  2. Follow leaf pile guidelines and keep them away from the gutter and storm drains.
  3. Call 311 to report street flooding, trees down or traffic signals out. Power outages should be reported to SMUD by calling 1-888-456-7683.
  4. Call 911 in case of emergencies.

“We also suggest if they have a pile sitting out and an empty organic waste container, filling the container from the pile will help our collections go faster and helps keep the gutters and streets clear, which is especially important in light of the imminent storm,” said Jesa David, a spokesperson for the City’s Recycling and Solid Waste Division.

David said that while the wet weather may delay leaf collections, organic waste will still be collected weekly in the container.

City customers can check when their street will be included in leaf collection at SacRecycle.org
