Traffic alert: turn restrictions planned for eastbound Broadway corridor

As construction on the Broadway Complete Streets project continues, commuters and residents should be aware of an upcoming detour that may affect their commute.

Starting Monday, April 15, eastbound right-hand turns on Broadway at Riverside Boulevard and Land Park Drive will be closed for approximately three to four weeks.

During this time contractors will be reconstructing the southwest corners of both intersections with new curbs, curb ramps and signal equipment, allowing the existing signal equipment to be removed. This work will remove the current free right turn movement to make the intersections more friendly for biking and walking.

“The project has reached a critical phase of construction where some of the more difficult to construct features need to be completed prior to beginning large scale paving operations,” said Philip Vulliet, project manager and senior engineer with the Department of Public Works. “At these two corners specifically, closure of right turn movements is needed to efficiently complete the work and avoid lengthy delays.”

Staff have developed a detour plan for commuters in the area and are encouraging the use of X Street as an alternate route.

The detours affect eastbound Broadway traffic seeking to head southbound on Riverside Boulevard and Land Park Drive.

Westbound left turns from Broadway onto southbound Land Park Drive and Riverside Boulevard will remain open.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution, follow provided traffic control signage and detours, and expect traffic delays.

“The construction team and City will take every available measure to expedite this work and minimize the duration of this inconvenience to the public,” Vulliet said.

The Broadway Complete Streets project will reduce vehicle traffic lanes from two lanes in each direction to one, with a dedicated center two-way left turn lane to improve property access and turning safety.

Construction on the project kicked off September 2023 with a series of curb and gutter repairs throughout the corridor. Additional work included making ramps ADA accessible and repairs to medians, with preparation for major grinding and paving activities set to begin mid-May.
