Sacramento Police enhance enforcement during Distracted Driving Awareness Month

The Sacramento Police Department is increasing enforcement this month as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, reminding drivers to stay alert and focused behind the wheel.

“Staying focused behind the wheel is something we can all do,” said Sacramento Police Sergeant Ken Collier. “Distracted Driving Awareness Month is an important reminder that even a moment of inattention or a quick glance at the phone can lead to serious consequences. Distracted driving is not only risky; it is deadly. Stay focused, stay alert and help us keep our roads safe.”

Officers will be actively looking for drivers violating California’s hands-free cell phone law, which prohibits holding a phone or electronic device while operating a vehicle — including while stopped at a red light. This includes talking, texting or using an app. First-time violations may result in a fine, while a second violation within 36 months adds a point to a driver’s record.

According to the 2024 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey, nearly 74% of drivers said texting while driving was their biggest safety concern. In 2022, 148 people were killed in distracted driving crashes in California, though officials believe the actual number is higher due to underreporting.

The Police Department urges all drivers to take simple precautions to avoid distractions:

  • Silence your phone and place it out of reach.
  • Set navigation and adjust controls before driving.
  • Keep both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
  • Avoid eating, grooming or multitasking while driving.
  • Speak up if you’re a passenger and notice the driver is distracted.
  • If something urgent arises, pull over safely before responding.

Funding for the distracted driving enforcement is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
