Hundreds of volunteers rolled up their sleeves on April 5 to take part in the City of Sacramento’s annual Earth Day clean-up and beautification events. The effort spanned nine sites—at least one in every City Council district—and was made possible through a robust collaboration between several City departments and community partners.
Led by the Office of Climate Action & Sustainability (OCAS), approximately 320 volunteers joined staff from Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment—including Landscape & Learning crews—the Department of Utilities, and Community Engagement Team, with key support from the Community Emergency Response Team, Recycling and Solid Waste, Department of Community Response, and the Office of Emergency Management.
The events also received support from councilmembers and Park Commissioners, who helped promote the events, provided refreshments, and assisted with on-site activities.
Together, participants planted over 220 native and drought-tolerant plants and spread 80+ cubic yards of mulch. Volunteers also collected and removed more than 11,000 pounds of litter and debris citywide.
“These events highlight the power and spirit of our community,” said Sarah Kolarik, the City’s sustainability analyst. “It’s incredibly inspiring to see so many volunteers come together with energy and heart to invest in our parks, community, and waterways. Their dedication showcases that when we care for the environment, we’re also nurturing the health and vitality of Sacramento for generations to come.”
