Weekend closure scheduled for Winding Way intersection as part of Arcade Creek Bridge Replacement

The City of Sacramento is alerting residents and commuters to a weekend closure at the intersection of Winding Way and Auburn Boulevard, scheduled from 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, as part of the ongoing Arcade Creek Bridge Replacement Project.

The temporary closure will allow crews to complete intersection paving efficiently and reduce the long-term impact on traffic flow. Motorists are advised to expect delays and use alternate routes during the closure, including Norris Avenue, Edison Avenue and Pasadena Avenue.

“This weekend closure allows us to make significant progress while minimizing long-term traffic impacts,” said Philip Vulliet, senior engineer with the Department of Public Works. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we work to deliver a safer, more resilient roadway for all users.”

The Arcade Creek Bridge Replacement Project, which began in May 2025, aims to replace the aging structure originally built in 1927. The new bridge is being constructed to meet current Caltrans and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials standards.

The original structure has long experienced challenges, including frequent flooding, ongoing traffic congestion and limited pedestrian access. The new, slightly elevated bridge will address these issues and offer key improvements, including:

  • A second turn lane to ease traffic on Auburn Boulevard for vehicles turning onto Winding Way
  • Continuous bike lanes and sidewalks for safer, multimodal travel
  • Decreased incidences of flooding during major storm events

For questions during construction, community members can call the project hotline at (800) 533-9758 or email admin@arcadecreekbridge.com.
