River Ready event brings boating, water safety outreach to Sacramento Marina on May 16

The Sacramento Marina will host “River Ready,” a free public boating and water safety event, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 16, at 2710 Ramp Way. The event coincides with National Safe Boating Week, an annual campaign that promotes responsible recreation and boating safety ahead of the busy summer season.

The community event will bring together local, state and nonprofit partners to provide hands-on education, safety resources and demonstrations focused on safe and responsible recreation on Sacramento waterways.

“Sacramento’s waterways are one of the city’s greatest recreational assets, and River Ready is about helping everyone enjoy them safely and responsibly,” said Marina Manager Kendra Gray. “By bringing together boating experts, emergency responders and environmental partners, we’re giving residents hands-on access to the tools and information they need before heading out on the water this summer.”

Attendees can receive free vessel safety checks by land or water, participate in a lifejacket giveaway while supplies last, explore a nautical swap meet and watch fire boat demonstrations. Demonstration rides will also be offered by Freedom Boat Club and Sacramento Boat Rentals.

Public outreach booths will feature information on invasive species prevention, pollution prevention, fish studies and clean-water practices.

Participating partners include the Sacramento Fire Department, Sacramento Police Department Marine Enforcement Detail,  the Department of Utilities, Sacramento Sheriff Marine Enforcement, California Department of Water Resources, Drowning Accident Rescue Team, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, America’s Boating Club, TowBoatUS Sacramento, and Keep Our Waters Clean.

City officials said the event is designed to connect residents with resources that improve water safety while encouraging stewardship of the Sacramento River and regional waterways.

Located along the Sacramento River just south of downtown, the Sacramento Marina serves as a hub for recreational boating, fishing and waterfront access in the city. The marina provides direct river access for residents and visitors and regularly partners with public safety and environmental agencies on outreach and preparedness efforts.

Organizers encourage attendees of all ages — including new boaters, anglers and families — to attend the free event and learn more about boating safety equipment, emergency response, clean-water practices and river recreation opportunities.
