If you’ve built an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), are currently building one or considered building one, the City of Sacramento wants to hear about your experience.
Homeowners are invited to participate in a survey that will help the City’s Planning Division better understand the ADU process, identify barriers and improve resources for future ADU projects.
An ADU is a secondary home on a property with an existing primary residence. ADUs can be attached to the primary home, detached as a separate structure, or created by converting or expanding existing spaces such as a garage or basement. The City allows up to two ADUs per lot, provided they comply with applicable state and local building standards.
“Whether homeowners completed an ADU or decided not to move forward, their feedback will help us better understand what’s working well and where we can improve the process and resources available to future applicants,” said Greta Soos, senior planner with the City’s Planning Division.
Survey responses will be used to evaluate and improve City programs, permitting processes and resources that support ADU development. Each survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.
The survey will remain open through Aug. 16, 2026.
Homeowners can complete the survey in English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese or Russian.
Separate surveys are available for those who have completed an ADU and those who are currently building one or who chose not to complete their project.
