Community members are invited to create bird-inspired artwork while learning about local birds and native plants during a free workshop that will help inform the design of future public art benches in North Natomas.
Hosted by the City’s Art in Public Places program in partnership with Councilmember Lisa Kaplan’s Office, the workshop will take place on Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at One Natomas Farmers Market (2501 New Market Drive).
The event is free, family-friendly and open to all ages. Children younger than 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. District 1 Councilmember Lisa Kaplan will also attend the event.
Led by artist Heather Hogan, participants will learn about birds and native plants found in the Natomas Basin before creating a bird habitat collage. They will then heat press their artwork onto a reusable zippered fabric bag to take home. No experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided while supplies last.
“Birds and Benches is about celebrating the natural environment of North Natomas while inviting the community to help shape a public art project that reflects the neighborhood,” said Amie Tokuhama-Chapman, arts program assistant with the Office of Arts and Culture. “These workshops give residents an opportunity to learn, create and contribute to a lasting public art installation.”

About Birds and Benches
The workshop is part of the Birds and Benches project, a community-driven public art initiative that encourages residents to explore North Natomas’ natural environment. Artwork and ideas created during the workshops will help inform the design of future public art benches planned for North Natomas Regional Park and along the Jackrabbit Trail.
Since launching earlier this year, the project has included artist talks, community meetings, workshops and outdoor activities that engage residents in the creative process. Artist Heather Hogan also serves as North Natomas Jibe’s Artist Ambassador. The organization is sponsoring two Birds and Benches art benches along the Jackrabbit Trail.
Additional free workshops are scheduled for July 25, Sept. 27 and Oct. 24 at North Natomas Regional Park.
The multi-phase project will conclude with a community exhibition in January 2027 featuring artwork by the five Artist Ambassadors, proposed bench designs and opportunities for community dialogue. Learn more about Birds and Benches on the City’s project webpage.
