The Sacramento Police Department is implementing a new traffic management plan this weekend to improve public safety and reduce traffic congestion in the Old Sacramento Waterfront.

Developed in partnership with the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, the plan is designed to enhance the experience for residents, visitors and businesses while addressing ongoing public safety and traffic concerns in the district.

Beginning this weekend, the traffic management plan will be in effect every Friday, Saturday and Sunday beginning at 10 p.m. and continuing through the evening.

During those hours, motorists will continue to have access to 2nd Street from both Capitol Mall and I Street. Vehicle access beyond 2nd Street into the Old Sacramento Waterfront will be restricted.

“This traffic management plan is one of several steps we’re taking to improve public safety in Old Sacramento during the busiest late-night hours,” Sacramento Police Department spokesperson Allison Smith said. “We want people to know this is a safe place to visit and enjoy, while sending a clear message that criminal activity and violence will not be tolerated.”

The Old Sacramento Parking Garage and Tower Bridge Garage will remain open and fully accessible throughout the traffic management plan. Visitors are encouraged to use these garages, as well as other nearby public parking facilities, when visiting Old Sacramento.

Pedestrians will continue to have access to all open businesses, and vehicles already parked within the restricted area will be able to exit at any time.

The Sacramento Police Department will continue evaluating conditions in the area and will adjust staffing and enforcement strategies as needed. The department will continue working with businesses, residents and community partners to address neighborhood concerns, improve public safety and hold those who commit crimes accountable.
