With the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory, the City of Sacramento will activate the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) and the North 5th Street Navigation Center as cooling centers where residents can find relief from the heat.

The OEC (3615 Auburn Blvd.) will operate from 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Walk-ups will be accepted, with the OEC able to accommodate up to 50 guests as part of its weather-respite activation. The center has storage available for personal belongings if needed and will accept pets.

The North 5th Street Navigation Center (700 North Fifth St.) will be open 1–8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3. The navigation center can accommodate up to 20 adults but does not allow pets. To maintain accessibility and ensure smooth operations, visitors are encouraged not to gather or linger in front of the shelter.

During this time, libraries and community centers will also be available during their normal hours of operation, and people can also use these air-conditioned buildings as places to cool off.

The City’s partnership with Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) will provide no-cost transportation to and from weather respite centers during their operation. To ride free, screenshot or print this SacRT flyer and present it to the bus operator upon boarding, or show light rail fare inspection staff upon request. Only valid to and from activated weather respite centers.

The City will continue to monitor the NWS’s forecast and extend cooling center operations as needed. The City will also monitor capacity at the sites to determine if other activations are necessary.
