As part of an ongoing effort to keep residents informed, City Manager Maraskeshia Smith is sharing the latest updates on upcoming events, City initiatives and community opportunities.

Free backpack giveaway at Pannell Meadowview Community Center

The Department of Youth, Parks & Community Enrichment will host a free backpack giveaway Friday, Aug. 14, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Pannell Meadowview Community Center. Families are invited to enjoy community resources, snow cones and popcorn. Backpacks are limited to one per child and available while supplies last.

Celebrate the reopening of the Martin Luther King Jr. Library

The City will celebrate the grand reopening of the Martin Luther King Jr. Library on Saturday, Aug. 15, following an 18-month, $8.3 million renovation. The community is invited to visit the newly renovated library and join the celebration.

Volunteer at the Healthy Roots Community Garden

YPCE’s Community Gardens Program will host a community garden workday on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8-10:30 a.m. at the Healthy Roots Community Garden (401 McClatchy Way). Volunteers will help with weeding, mulching and turning compost. Tools and equipment will be provided.

Share your feedback on the Vision Zero Action Plan

Residents can provide feedback on the City’s updated Vision Zero Action Plan through Aug. 17. The plan will help guide Sacramento’s efforts to improve roadway safety and reduce serious injuries and fatalities.

Learn the basics of urban biking and scooting

The City will host a free, in-person Urban Biking & Scooting 101 class Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Library (4799 Stockton Blvd.). The class covers rules of the road, safety and practical tips for getting around by bike or scooter.
