Understanding building permit and inspection requirements before opening a business can help entrepreneurs avoid costly delays and keep projects on track.
To help business owners prepare for the permitting process, the Community Development Department’s Building Division is hosting a free “Permitting 101 for Small Business” workshop on Sept. 16 from 3-5 p.m. at 300 Richards Blvd., Room 221. Free parking is available on site.
Advance registration is required, and space is limited.
“Small businesses continue to play a vital role in Sacramento’s economy, and we’re committed to making sure entrepreneurs across our community have the support they need to thrive,” said Development Project Manager Ann Rosendale. “Our goal is to reach even more business owners and provide practical guidance that helps them plan ahead, navigate challenges and move their projects forward with confidence.”
Designed for entrepreneurs who are opening, relocating or expanding a business, the workshop will help attendees understand the permits, approvals and requirements that may affect their project before opening their doors.
Attendees will learn:
- How to evaluate potential tenant spaces before signing a lease
- When Planning Entitlements are required and how to obtain them
- Key building permit requirements and forms
- Common approvals required by agencies such as SacSewer, Environmental Health and Public Works
- Tips for accessibility compliance, inspections and avoiding project delays
Attendees will also have an opportunity to connect with City staff and ask questions about their specific projects.
In addition to covering permits and construction, the City’s Business Solutions Center will provide an overview of programs, services and resources available to support businesses at every stage, from planning and launching to growth and expansion.
The workshop is part of the City’s Small Business Liaison Program, which was launched through the Streamline Sacramento initiative to help businesses navigate permitting requirements, connect with City resources and access City services more efficiently.
