Professional artists are invited to apply to design and fabricate a public artwork at the renovated Martin Luther King Jr. Library in south Sacramento.
The City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts and Culture, through its Art in Public Places (APP) program, has issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for an artist to create a three-dimensional wall-hanging artwork at the library’s public entrance. The library is located at 7340 24th Street Bypass.
The artwork should explore the theme of civil rights and create a welcoming entrance that reflects the library’s role in the community. It will be installed on one or both of the brick walls leading from the parking lot to the main doors.
“We want the artwork to connect the library’s entrance with its’ namesake and the history of the civil rights movement,” said Donald Gensler, the City’s APP Manager. “The selected artist will have an opportunity to meet with the local community and library careholders to help interpret those themes in a way that is meaningful to the artist and the south Sacramento community.”
The artwork may be figurative, abstract, or nonobjective and could include sculptural relief panels or a series of constructed panels attached to the walls. Painted murals applied directly to the brick will not be considered.
Artists specializing in sculpture, sculptural relief, site-specific design or environmental installations are encouraged to apply. Additional consideration will be given to artists with experience in or connections to south Sacramento and its communities.
The project has a total award amount of $151,500 and is funded through the City’s 2% for Public Art Ordinance.
The City will host a virtual information session from noon to 1 p.m. on Oct. 12. Attendance is not required to apply, but the session will provide an opportunity for artists to ask questions and receive assistance with the online application process. All application information is included in the RFQ, and the application follows APP’s standard process and requirements. Artists interested in attending can register online.
Applications must be submitted through the City’s online application portal by 11:59 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26.
