Friday, March 27, 9 a.m. to Wednesday April 1 to 6 a.m. – 16th and R Street intersection closed
The intersection of 16th and R streets will be closed to all traffic, 24 hours a day, beginning Friday morning, March 27, through Wednesday morning, April 1 to safely reconstruct the intersection. Motorists will be required to detour around the intersection, which will be clearly identified by the use of message boards and construction signs. The detour will be S Street to 14th Street then onto Q Street, which will take them back to 16th Street around the project. The complete closure will allow the work to take place over one holiday weekend as opposed to closures for consecutive weekends.
The R Street Improvement Project includes removing the existing roadway, installing new curb, gutter and sidewalk, placing a subsurface concrete slab as a foundation for railroad tracks and a new concrete surface at 16th and R.
Ongoing construction
R Street will be closed between 16th and 18th during construction with the exception of access to delivery trucks to businesses in the Safeway complex. Detours will be in place. Additionally, on-street parking will be unavailable between 16th and 18th street and on 17th street from the alley between R and S up to the light rail tracks north of R Street.
The purpose of the R Street Improvement Project is to reconstruct and improve areas of R Street that include a concrete roadway, on-street parking, raised walkways, decorative pavers, landscaping, lighting, improved drainage, the construction of a new water main, and the preservation of existing railroad tracks within the context of the improvements.
