This new pilot program is hiring formerly homeless people to help clean up the community

With shovels, rakes, brooms, trucks and teamwork, six people who had been experiencing homelessness in Sacramento’s River District now are working to help clean up the community.

The Clean and Safe Team is a collaboration between the River District and the City’s Department of Community Response.

Since June 2021, workers in this pilot program have removed approximately 150 tons of trash and debris from encampments and other areas.

In addition to providing needed services to neighborhoods, this program assists people who would like to return to the local workforce by “offering job-skill development, good pay and hope,” said Gregg Fishman, media and communications specialist for the Department of Community Response.
