Sacramento residents for a limited time can purchase rain barrels at a discounted rate from the City’s Department of Utilities.
Rain barrels collect water from roofs to store it for later use on lawns, gardens or indoor plants.
“A lot of people are so excited about these rain barrels. They reach out, they ask when they can get more,” said William Granger, the City’s water conservation coordinator. “We’re just trying to make sure everyone has a chance to purchase one.”
People can order up to two barrels online beginning at 5 a.m. Oct. 20. Barrels cost about $45 and are shipped directly to an address.
“It’s a great way to use rainwater for your landscapes, while saving drinking water for other uses during the drought,” he said.
New customers will receive priority, while customers who have purchase barrels in the past will be placed on a waiting list.
“Barrel sales are first come, first serve. Last year, we ran out after about five or six days,” said Granger.
