Thousands of people are expected to participate in three events honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 16.
For the safety of participants and residents, the Sacramento Police Department will facilitate rolling street closures throughout the events. Officers will close streets as late as possible and reopen as early as safety allows.
March for the Dream
The march kicks off at 8:30 a.m. at the Oak Park Community Center (3425 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.). This portion of the march, called the Extra Mile, will gather community leaders and residents for an early ceremonial start to the march.
The official start of the march will begin at 9 a.m. at Sacramento City College (3835 Freeport Blvd.). The march and parade will wind its way down Sacramento’s Land Park neighborhoods, continue to downtown Sacramento, and then conclude at Sacramento City College.
Street closures will occur along the following:
- 13th Avenue between Freeport Boulevard and Land Park Drive
- Land Park Drive between 13th Avenue and Broadway
- Broadway between 16th Street and Freeport Boulevard
- Freeport Boulevard between Broadway and Sutterville Road
For participants who park near Sacramento City College or the Oak Park Community Center, SacRT will provide free light rail service to and from the Sacramento City College station. Participants must present a flyer to SacRT staff.

The North Area Martin Luther King Jr. March
The North Area March, sponsored by the Roberts Family Development Center, kicks off at 10 a.m. at Grant Union High School (1400 Grand Av3). The march begins 9:30 a.m. and is expected to end at 12 p.m. back at Grant Union High School for a business-and-resource fair.
Street closures will occur during the march at the following locations:
- Grant Union High School off Grand Avenue
- Marysville/Del Paso Boulevard
- Eleanor Avenue
- Norwood Avenue
- Fairbanks Avenue
- Mabel Street
- Silver Eagle Road
- Norwood Avenue
- Grand Avenue

MLK Jr. Day Freedom Caravan and Wellness Fair
The event will begin at 7000 Franklin Blvd. Suite 1000 with the caravan parade beginning at 10 a.m. The wellness fair will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. See map below for the caravan route.
