City Council confirms its Vice Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem and committee positions

Two of the youngest members of the Sacramento City Council have been appointed by Mayor Darrell Steinberg and unanimously confirmed by the City Council for leadership posts.

The Council on Jan. 9 approved Councilmember Caity Maple (District 5) as Vice Mayor and Councilmember Karina Talamantes (District 3) as Mayor Pro Tempore for 2024. Vice Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore appointments typically last for a calendar year.

Caity Maple (left) and Karina Talamantes were appointed to new Council leadership posts.

The Vice Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore chair meetings in the Mayor’s absence and often represent the City in public if the Mayor is unable to be present. Councilmember Eric Guerra (District 6) served as Vice Mayor and Councilmember Mai Vang (District 8) was Mayor Pro Tempore in 2023.

“Vice Mayor Maple and Mayor Pro Tem Talamantes represent a new generation of leadership in the Sacramento region,” Steinberg said. “They have worked hard in their first year as Councilmembers, and I’m sure they will continue this dedication citywide. While we have much work left to do as a region, we should take this moment as a step in the right direction for gender equality.”

“In making these appointments, Mayor Steinberg recognized the power that we have as a majority-women City Council in advancing meaningful and inclusive policies that benefit our entire community,” said Maple.

The City Council also recently approved Steinberg’s appointments for the formal committees that make up the City’s governance structure. Those committees are Law & Legislation, Personnel & Public Employees, Budget & Audit, and the Racial Equity Committee. Those appointments include:

  • Law & Legislation: Eric Guerra, Rick Jennings, Caity Maple, and Katie Valenzuela (Chair)

  • Personnel & Public Employees: Lisa Kaplan (Chair), Caity Maple, Karina Talamantes, and Katie Valenzuela

  • Budget & Audit: Eric Guerra, Karina Talamantes (Vice-Chair), Mai Vang, and Mayor Darrell Steinberg (Chair)

  • Racial Equity: Rick Jennings, Lisa Kaplan, Mai Vang (Co-Chair), and Mayor Darrell Steinberg (Co-Chair)

Steinberg also appointed Councilmembers to represent the city on regional governance bodies such as the Sacramento Area Council of Governments and joint powers authorities such as the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency. See a full list of the appointments by clicking here.
