How to get up to $3,000 in grants for neighborhood and waterway clean-ups

The City’s Department of Utilities is now offering grants to community groups to help fund projects that protect, restore or enhance rivers, creeks and nearby areas in the city.

The grants for up to $3,000 are designed to help prevent urban runoff pollution and protect water quality.

“These grants have such a positive impact on our residents and businesses in helping prevent pollution and keep our waters clean,” said Jessica McCabe, an outreach specialist with the City’s Department of Utilities. “At the end of the day it benefits our riverways and neighborhoods as well as our community as a whole.”

A variety of community groups  — including schools and student groups, neighborhood organizations and informal groups — can apply.

“Depending on how many applicants we get, we can award up to $3,000 per application,” says McCabe.

Eligible projects must benefit Sacramento watersheds and can include educational materials, school projects, restoration projects or neighborhood improvements projects.

Community groups that have ideas for projects that are within Sacramento city boundaries and directly affect residents can apply by email or mail by Feb. 26.

The Department of Utilities has been offering grants to help clean up area waterways for more than 20 years.
