Wondering what to do with your decorative tree after the holidays are over? The City has multiple options for recycling trees.
The easiest method for City residents who receive curbside collection services from the Recycling and Solid Waste Division is to put their tree out as part of their leaf season collection. Those who receive the service can put out up to five trees in the street, along with any leaf piles, for pickup by the Claw.
The trees (and any leaf piles) should be kept out of storm drains and clear of bike lanes. Flocked trees are accepted, but any plastic, metal or other decorations must be removed.
Customers can check the collection calendar to see an estimate of when their leaf pile (and trees) will be removed. The schedule is updated daily and may change, depending on factors such as rainy weather and how much material is put out on the streets.
The last day to put out piles or holiday trees for collection will be Feb. 3, 2025.
“There are multiple opportunities in the greater Sacramento area to recycle your tree for free,” says Jesa David, spokesperson for the Recycling and Solid Waste Division. “Another option would be to trim it down so it can fit into your curbside organic waste container.”
Customers must find a legal method to dispose of their tree. Improper disposal of holiday trees on City streets is considered illegal dumping.
