The Recycling and Solid Waste Division provides multiple resources for City of Sacramento customers to easily dispose of their bulky household items properly.
For large household items such as old carpeting, broken barbecue grills or worn-out mattresses, customers can request a free household junk pickup from February through October. Yard waste can be included in the appointment, but appliances and electronic waste (E-waste) require a separate appointment, which is also free.
Customers can schedule up to two pickups each for household junk and appliances/E-waste per calendar year. All pickup appointments can be scheduled by the property owner or tenant by contacting the City’s Customer Service or calling 3-1-1.
“We want to make it easy for all our customers to get rid of their household waste the right way,” said Jesa David, spokesperson for the Division. “This includes services like household junk and appliance pickups, as well as our dump coupon.”
There are important guidelines customers should keep in mind when preparing bulky waste for a pickup.
- Place pile 6’ (six feet) away from parked vehicles.
- Pile must not exceed 4′ X 4′ X 9′ (four feet by four feet by nine feet) in length. Oversized piles may incur a fee.
- Yard waste is accepted but should be kept separate from trash. This helps staff divert yard waste for recycling.
- Loose smaller items should be placed in disposable containers like cardboard boxes to enable pickup.
- Materials must be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled appointment day, no earlier than 24 hours before the scheduled appointment. Early set-outs may result in a fine.
Customers who prefer to self-haul can use the dump coupon mailed to every household with the yearly service guide, which permits one free carload of household waste to be dropped off for free disposal.
City residents can also drop off Household Hazardous Waste items for free, including paint, batteries, and chemicals at the same facility. Customers can use the Waste Wizard tool to determine how best to dispose of an item.
