More Sacramento residents can now get a rebate for replacing older toilets

The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities has expanded its toilet rebate program, making more residential customers eligible to receive money back when replacing older, higher-flow toilets with water-efficient models.

Eligible customers can now receive a rebate of up to $50 for replacing qualifying toilets manufactured between 1992 and 2013 that use 1.6 gallons per flush. Previously, the residential rebate was limited to qualifying toilets manufactured before 1992.

“We wanted to make this rebate available to more of our customers and encourage them to replace older toilets that are still using more water than today’s most efficient models,” said William Granger, the City’s water conservation coordinator. “Even if your toilet isn’t decades old, there may now be an opportunity to upgrade, save water and receive some money back.”

Customers replacing qualifying toilets manufactured before 1992 that use 3.5 gallons per flush or more can continue to receive a rebate of up to $175.

To qualify for either rebate, the replacement toilet must be a Maximum Performance (MaP) Premium ultra-high-efficiency model that uses 1.1 gallons per flush or less. Customers must also receive pre-approval from the City before removing or replacing their existing toilet.

“Replacing an older toilet is a relatively simple way to reduce water use inside your home,” Granger said. “Newer ultra-high-efficiency models can provide the same performance while using significantly less water with every flush.”

The residential rebate is available to eligible single-family and multi-family properties served by City of Sacramento water. The City also offers a separate high-efficiency toilet rebate for eligible commercial, industrial and institutional customers.
