As part of an ongoing effort to keep residents informed, City Manager Maraskeshia Smith is sharing the latest updates on upcoming events, City initiatives and community opportunities.

Create a tile for a North Natomas public art project

A free tile-making workshop will be held Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as part of the City’s Birds and Benches public art project. Participants will create tiles inspired by the birds and natural environment of the Natomas Basin for future public art benches in North Natomas. Registration is available through Eventbrite.

Get expert advice on creating a water-saving yard

Residents can learn how to transform their yards into water-saving landscapes at the City’s Water Wise Garden Showcase Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Department of Utilities main campus, 1395 35th Ave. The free event will offer residents an opportunity to learn from City staff about creating attractive, water-efficient landscapes.

Enjoy live music at the Sacramento Marina

“Swing By the Marina” returns to the Sacramento Marina Sept. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. The free event will feature live music from Sacramento-based Swing Collective, with food available for purchase from Good Eats Southern Bar-B-Q. Admission and parking are free.

Get free compost for your home or garden

City of Sacramento residents can receive free compost through the City’s Compost Giveaway Program through Sept. 30, while supplies last. Residents can order bulk or bagged compost, with up to 6 cubic yards of bulk compost and 16 bags per residence per year. Pickup appointments are required.

Apply for nonprofit grant funding

Local nonprofit organizations can apply for $225,000 in funding through the City’s Ann Land and Bertha Henschel Memorial Fund. Eligible nonprofits must have an office or facility in Sacramento and serve people in need within city limits. Applications for the 2027 grant cycle are due Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.

Get free support through the Business Solutions Center

Sacramento business owners and entrepreneurs can receive free, one-on-one assistance through the City’s Business Solutions Center. Since launching in 2025, the center and California Capital have supported more than 300 businesses, helping participants secure $1.62 million in grants and loans and generate $2.15 million in increased sales. Qualifying businesses may also be eligible for microgrants of up to $5,000 and City fee credits of up to $2,500.
