City celebrates Front Street Embarcadero Renovation with a ‘Boardbreaking’

Today, City officials and partners “levered” the first plank at the Front Street Embarcadero groundbreaking. The event celebrated the collaborative effort among City officials, the business community, and State Parks to revitalize the riverfront.

Renovations of the Front Street Embarcadero will begin this month and will consist of rehabilitation of the riverfront walkway between J Street and Neasham Circle, west of Front Street. Construction will be done in phases to allow all the businesses to remain open. Construction will be completed by November 2017.

The upgrade will improve accessibility across the train tracks to the waterfront and be ADA / Building code compliant. The project will replace the existing wooden walkway with stamped and colored concrete made to look like wooden planks. The benefits of stamped concrete include:

  • One of the most durable and long-lasting paving materials available
  • Less maintenance
  • Historically accurate aesthetic for Old Sacramento

In addition, the project will also provide improved Front Street access to the riverfront, metal railing along the train tracks and river, and historically accurate LED lighting to replace the existing lights. The $7.7 million project was approved by City Council in May 2017.
