City seeks formal proposals for what to do with this abandoned tree nursery

A new life soon could come to an abandoned City tree nursery in South Sacramento.

The City this summer asked interested parties for informal ideas on how to reactivate a former City farm near Executive Airport that was once used to grow trees and other plants for municipal landscapes.

After receiving a variety of responses indicating interest, the City this week began a formal “request for proposal” process.

The 5-acre site has been abandoned since 2008 and has many possible uses, including a community garden, agricultural education center or neighborhood farm stand, said City project manager Jennifer Venema

“This project is about creating an active amenity, with agriculture and learning opportunities, for a community that may not have previously had it,” Venema said. “Examples of re-using assets like this could improve quality of life across the city.”

The property is in disuse because the City found it more cost effective to purchase trees and plants rather than growing its own.

The deadline to submit for a “request for proposal” explaining how an operator would use the site is Sept. 27, 2019 at 2 p.m.. A pre-bid informational meeting is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4 at the former nursery (1920 34th Ave.).

In addition, the City has created this FAQ about the property as well as the RFP process.
