In celebration of Memorial Day, the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium (1515 J St.) will be hosting a free community event from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, May 27.

“We are honored to open the doors of this historic venue to the community,” said Matthew Voreyer, general manager of the Memorial Auditorium. “Join us as we pay tribute to the Sacramento citizens who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”

The Memorial Day community event will feature a flag ceremony in which the American flag will be raised at the front steps of the building followed by an honor guard presentation arranged by the Sacramento nonprofit Veterans Affiliated Council.

Attendees will then be invited into an open house held in the auditorium, which will feature patriotic and Americana music on the Estey Municipal Organ located inside the chambers.

Throughout the day, the Memorial Auditorium’s chimes will sound the national anthem every hour on the hour from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The chimes were gifted to the building by the nonprofit American War Mothers.

No RSVP or registration is required.

The Memorial Auditorium opened in 1927 and is dedicated as a memorial and tribute to city residents who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. Renovations to the building were completed in 2019 and included new seats, improved lighting, acoustical elements and other upgrades.
