Memorial Auditorium ready to host theater shows when Community Center goes dark this summer

New seats, improved lighting and acoustical elements are just some of the upgrades that were done to the newly renovated Memorial Auditorium.

“During the whole process, the City wanted to protect the historical integrity of the building as well as provide a better experience for those attending a show,” said Sabrina Tefft, Project Manager.

The renovations are part of the C3 project which involves the renovation/expansion of the Memorial Auditorium, the Convention Center and the Community Center Theater.

The Community Center Theater and the Convention Center will close for construction in Summer 2019 and re-open in Fall 2020. During this time, all shows scheduled at the Community Center Theater will be relocated to the Memorial Auditorium.

Upgrades to the building include: refurbished audience seating, improved lighting and rigging, acoustic enhancements, ADA upgrades, temporary restrooms and a loading dock area. New seats were also purchased for the floor.

“The new seats are reflective of the character of the building and are typically what someone would find in a performing arts theater,” said Tefft.

As part of the grand reopening, the City’s Convention and Cultural Services and members of the Friends of the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium will be hosting a tour of the upgraded facilities on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to noon. A flag ceremony will also be conducted by the C.K. McClatchy High School Color Guard.

The Memorial Auditorium opened in 1927 and is dedicated as a memorial and tribute to city residents who served in the military.
