At Front Street Animal Shelter, keeping pets healthy and with the families who love them extends far beyond the shelter walls. Through a partnership with Petco Love, Front Street provides free monthly community vaccine clinics that are making a lifesaving impact across Sacramento.
The program, which started in 2022, has served 2,898 cats and 10,781 dogs through free vaccine clinics across Sacramento.
In addition to vaccines for dogs and cats, the clinics also offer free microchips and first-time pet licenses to help reunite lost pets with their families and support responsible pet ownership.
Front Street staff and volunteers help organize traffic flow, assist pet owners, administer vaccines and answer questions each month. The program relies on the support of dedicated volunteers working alongside shelter staff.
Volunteer Coordinator Abbie Payne said one of the most rewarding parts of the clinics is seeing the incredible turnout from community members who are committed to caring for their pets.
“It’s amazing to see so many people show up each month to participate in these clinics,” said Payne. “You can really see how much this community cares about keeping their pets healthy, protected, and safely at home with their families. It’s such a positive thing to be part of.”
As a municipal stray-intake shelter, Front Street knows helping pet owners before a crisis can keep animals out of the shelter and with their families.
“We are so thankful for our partnership with Petco Love, which allows us to continue offering these free monthly clinics for pets in our community,” said Interim Shelter Manager Ryan Hinderman. “Increasing the number of owned pets that are microchipped and licensed can help reunite lost animals with their families faster, and hopefully, keep owned pets out of the shelter system.”
