City Council reinstates pre-pandemic on-street parking operations

Sacramento City Council last Tuesday voted to repeal parking measures that were put in place at the start of the pandemic, in March of 2020. This resolution includes the immediate reinstatement of parking meter operating hours and implementation of citation collections.

To help mitigate the economic impacts of the pandemic, and to support local businesses, the City Council passed a resolution in March 2020 to provide free on-street metered parking after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. City Council in May 2020 voted to waive parking citation collections and late payment fees.

“With the reopening of businesses and large events, parking management operations need to be fully restored to facilitate the efficient turnover of parking spaces, which supports retail, entertainment, and residential use,” said the City’s Parking Services Manager, Matt Eierman. “As the economy recovers from the pandemic, it’s important to restart regular parking operations. It is anticipated that parking operations will be gradually restored to pre-pandemic levels.”

To further offset the economic impacts of the pandemic, the City’s parking division worked with local businesses and stakeholders to create priority curbside food pick-up zones and make parking spaces available for expanded outdoor Al Fresco dining.

Assessment of parking citation penalties and collection activities will resume on Nov. 4, 2021, and full parking management operations will fully return to pre-pandemic levels on Jan. 3, 2022.

Parking at meters will still be free on most city-observed holidays. It will also be free after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends during the Holiday Parking Program, from Nov. 25 through Dec. 26.
