Front Street Shelter waiving dog adoption fees after large hoarding rescue

The Front Street Animal Shelter took in over 30 dogs from a hoarding situation last week, quickly overwhelming its capacity. The shelter will be waiving dog adoption fees through Sept. 15 to assist in clearing space.

“We were already very full before this happened, with multiple dogs housed in most kennels,” said Ryan Hinderman, communications manager at the shelter. “The shelter has 99 dog kennels, but after the rescue, had nearly double that number of dogs.”

The dogs from the hoarding situation are mostly chihuahua mixes and have been made available for adoption. The shelter has dozens of dogs in various sizes and breeds.

“There really is a dog for everyone here,” said Hinderman. “They’re great dogs that just need a second chance.”

The shelter has seen more animals in the past few years than ever before, according to staff. In 2023, the shelter saw more than 9,000 animals. When there is a large rescue effort, it impacts any shelter that already struggles to keep up with day-to-day intake.

For a $0 adoption fee, adopters will get a dog that is fixed, microchipped, and vaccinated.

All available dogs can be seen on the shelter’s Adopt a Dog website. The shelter is open every day, noon- 5 p.m. to visit available dogs on site.
